A South St. Paul man is doing his part to help families who have loved ones serving overseas in Iraq.

Terry Pieper, 45, a staff sergeant in the National Guard, served as a communications solider in Iraq for 11 months, from October 2004 to September 2005.

Henry Sibley High School Spanish teacher Mark Stewart spent Jan. 27 to Feb. 10 volunteering in Guinea, West Africa. With four other men, Stewart repaired vehicles, maintained buildings, and installed solar panels to help missionaries there who are reaching out to the Maninka people.

Artist Mike Wohnoutaka scored a big hit with second-graders at Somerset Elementary in Mendota Heights when he visited the school on Thursday, March 2. He was one of several celebrities who helped the school celebrate “Read Across America Day” by demonstrating the value and importance of reading.
