Highway 36: 75-day closure between U.S. 61 and White Bear Avenue begins June 17

Motorists who regularly travel on state Highway 36 between U.S. Highway 61 and White Bear Avenue in Maplewood will need to begin planning alternate routes now, as the thoroughfare will be fully closed in both directions for more than two months starting at 6 a.m. Monday, June 17.
The 75-day closure is part of the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s $17 million Highway 36/English Street reconstruction project. The current signalized intersection is being replaced by a grade-separated diamond interchange.

Ramsey County begins accepting same-sex marriage license applications

Following legislation legalizing same-sex marriage that Gov. Mark Dayton signed into law on May 14, Ramsey County began accepting same-sex marriage license applications on Thursday, June 6.
Licenses will not be issued until Thursday, Aug. 1, at 12:01 a.m. Also beginning that day, Minnesota will recognize legal marriages of same-sex couples that took place in other states.

The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office has partnered with CodeRED to provide county-wide community alerts and notifications.
Originally designed to enable local government officials to record, send and track personalized messages to thousands of citizens in minutes using high-speed community notifications, CodeRED’s user base has grown to include institutions of higher learning and utility companies.

Peter Fischer Named Century College’s 2013 Outstanding Alum

The Century College Alumni Association Board of Directors has named Peter Fischer the 2013 Century College Outstanding Alum. He gave the commencement address to Century graduates on May 17 at Aldrich Arena.
A Maplewood resident and a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives serving his first term, Fischer was the student body president at Lakewood Community College, a forerunner of Century College, in the late 1970s, a time of dramatic social change. It was at Lakewood that Fischer resolved to spend his life helping people make their voices heard.

Bruentrup Heritage Farm to unveil new dairy exhibit

If you’re looking for relief from a hectic urban schedule, be sure to mark your calendars for “Dairy Day at the Farm” on Saturday, June 15, at Maplewood’s historic Bruentrup Heritage Farm located at 2170 E. County Road D. The Maplewood Historical Society will be unveiling its brand new dairy exhibit and gazebo from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Maplewood candidates file for office

Filing for Maplewood’s open mayoral seat and two city council positions closed Tuesday, June 4, with three candidates throwing their hats in the ring for mayor and seven candidates vying for two city council seats.
Mayor Will Rossbach announced earlier this spring that he would not be running for re-election. He served on the city council for six years before he was elected mayor in 2009. His decision step down created an opening that former mayor Diana Longrie, former DFL state representative Nora Slawik and resident Fran Grant hope to fill.
