The city has gone to the kids

Several fourth graders took on the roles of the mayor and city council members, while other children took on the role of residents. The residents had the opportunity to share their opinions about having an open or organized waste hauling system, and the council took a vote. The first group of fourth graders voted four to two for an open system, but the other two groups passed an organized system with six to one and five to two votes. The results of the children’s votes will be presented to the real city council at an upcoming meeting when the trash hauling system is discussed.

One firefighter showed the students how he could use a special tool to pry open any door in the city in the event of a fire. The students also saw what an infrared camera looks like when it detects heat and learned that a firefighter needs to get his or her gear on in one minute or less in order to be prepared to fight a fire.

On May 18, fourth graders from Garlough Environmental Magnet School took over West St. Paul City Hall.

New roundabout coming to Inver Grove Heights next year

The roundabout at Highway 3 and 70th Street will shift the intersection slightly from where it currently sits. Work is slated to begin in a year.

Though sometimes a hot-button traffic control issue, no residents spoke for or against a proposed roundabout in Inver Grove Heights at the city council’s May 8 meeting.
