Tri-City Maroon pulls upset in Legion district playoffs

A solid pitching performance and production at the top of the batting order added up to victory for the Tri-City Maroon American Legion baseball team on Tuesday. Tri-City upset Hamline Purple 3-2 in the second round of the Fourth District playoffs at Midway Stadium.

Aaron Starr pitched a complete-game five-hitter and Nate Mills and Michael Wulff combined for five hits and three runs scored for Maroon, which is the sixth seed in the tournament. Hamline Purple, made up of players from Cretin-Derham Hall High School in St. Paul, is the third seed.

Starr gave up two runs on five hits and five walks while striking out three. He surrendered runs to Purple in the fifth and seventh innings.

Tri-City never trailed and grabbed the first lead of the game in the top of the fifth. Mills singled with one out, stole second and scored on Wulff's single.

In the seventh inning, Mills walked with one out and scored on a triple by Wulff, who drove the ball to the wall in the gap in left-center field. Wulff then scored what would turn out to be the deciding run when Ryan Schwartz' grounder to third resulted in a throwing error.

The victory sends Maroon to a third-round match-up Wednesday at 8 p.m. at Midway Stadium against either second-seeded Tri-City Red or seventh-seeded White Bear Orange. Purple drops into the loser's bracket and will face White Bear Orange or Tri-City Red Wednesday at 5 p.m. at North St. Paul.
