Mustangs, Panthers advance in boys soccer playoffs

The boys soccer teams from Mounds View High School and Spring Lake Park/St. Anthony Village took care of business in their Section 5AA quarterfinals on Tuesday.

Third-seeded Mounds View beat sixth-seeded Maple Grove 3-1 while fourth-seeded SLP/SAV took care of fifth-seeded Irondale 3-0.

Mounds View, fresh off winning the Suburban East Conference championship last week, ran its winning streak to 10 games with the win. The Mustangs also gained a measure of revenge by beating the Crimson, which knocked off Mounds View in overtime in last year's section semifinals.

The Mustangs got another bit of good news later on Tuesday when they found out Centennial upset second-seeded Park Center 1-0. That means Mounds View is hosting the seventh-seeded Cougars on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the semifinals.

Spring Lake Park/St. Anthony Village, the fourth seed, wasn't fortunate enough to land a home game in the semifinals. Top-seeded and second-ranked Champlin Park avoided the upset and beat eighth-seeded Osseo 3-1 on Tuesday and will host SLP/SAV at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

Thursday's match will be the third time in the past four seasons that the Panthers and Rebels have faced each other in the section playoffs. SLP/SAV beat Champlin 2-1 in overtime in the semifinals in 2010, a year after Champlin did the same thing to the Panthers in the quarterfinals.

The two semifinal winners square off for the section championship on Oct. 16.
