New Brighton seminary gets approval to rent out space for K-8 school

United Theological Seminary in New Brighton has received permission from the city to lease space out to be used as a K-8 school, though as of yet UTS does not have a tenant.

Running is New Brighton man’s key to North Korea

Lowell Thompson, 78, now back at his New Brighton home from his trip to North Korea, holds a memento from his time in the isolated East Asian country: the shirt he was given to race in.

Thompson, a sprinter, found himself running a 10K race in North Korea in early April. Here, he stands before thousands of North Korean spectators at a Pyongyang stadium.

One way to get to North Korea is to simply run there. Recently, that’s what a New Brighton man did to unlock the doors to one of the most inaccessible countries in the world.

Roseville writing group for women in prison leads to new book

Joan Moses compiled and edited stories written by the women she works with at Residential Re-Entry Center of Roseville and published them in a book called “Breaking the Cycle, Writings from Women in Prison.” Sitting at her dining room table in her New Brighton home, she reads an excerpt.

Every Wednesday evening, a group of women gather in Roseville to write. This is a different kind of writers’ group, though, one in which grammar, spelling, structure and even coherency aren’t the main focus.

Shoreview natives’ St. Paul brewery will be about the beer, and the space, too

Elliot Grosse, Karl Eicher and Dalton Buchta, who all grew up in the same Shoreview neighborhood, stand at the future bar in the future taproom of the brewery they’re opening in downtown St. Paul. Still undergoing renovations to create a “modern cafe” vibe, they say 12welve Eyes should be open by July.

Karl Eicher, Elliot Grosse and Dalton Buchta stand at the main entrance to 12welve Eyes, located in the basement of the historic Pioneer Endicott building on Robert and Fourth streets in downtown St. Paul.

In another world, “12welve Eyes” might have been the name of their high school band, but for three young men from Shoreview, sights weren’t set on making tunes in a garage, but beer in a basement. And that’s what they did ...
