Oldies but goodies: St. Anthony-based chorus brings barbershop classics to Hamline


The North Star Chorus, a men’s barbershop group based out of St. Anthony, will be presenting its annual fall show on Sept. 14 at Hamline University in St. Paul. The Spring Lake Park-Blaine-Mounds View Fire Department has come a long way since 1944, evolving from a group of farmers protecting each other’s homes to roughly 100 full-time staff members and volunteers serving a rapidly growing area.

Former New Brighton school demolished to make way for housing


Construction crews began demolishing the former New Brighton Elementary School on Aug. 14, in order to get the city-owned land ready for sale to Pulte and Dominium. The developers will then build 411 affordable and market-rate units on the 12-acre site, which spans Old Highway 8 where the road jogs east toward City Hall. (Bridget Kranz)
