Mounds View High School basketball player Nate Albers has amassed a number of accolades this season and added another last week. Albers, a senior, was voted the Aspire Athlete of the Week on March 10.

The girls basketball teams from Irondale and Mounds View faced tall tasks heading into the Section 5AAAA playoffs last week. Both squads finished below .500 in the regular season and went up against opponents that combined to win 38 games.

Mounds View takes second at section swim meet

Two Mustangs relay teams qualify for state

The Mounds View High School boys swimming and diving team took second place at the Section 4AA championship meet finals on Feb. 27 at Stillwater Junior High School. The Mustangs scored 368 points to claim the runner-up trophy after battling North St. Paul for the second spot all afternoon. The Polars finished with 314 points. Stillwater easily won the championship with a score of 533 points. 

The Mustangs were led by their 200-yard and 400-yard freestyle relay teams, which both finished second to earn a trip to the Class AA state meet at the University of Minnesota’s Jean Freeman Aquatic Center on March 2-4. Several Mustangs posted season-best times in their respective events over the course of the three-day meet.

Knights, Mustangs bow out in section quarterfinals

As the seventh and eighth seeds, the Mounds View and Irondale/St. Anthony boys hockey teams hung in longer than expected against their higher-seeded opponents in the Section 4AA playoffs.
