A History of Maplewood

The written history of Maplewood begins about 165 years ago when European and French-Canadian settlers began farming in this area. Prior to this time, the land was inhabited by the Dakota Indians with occasional visits by French and English fur traders and explorers. The landscape was a mix of scrub oak and prairie with many wetlands and lakes.

Surveillance photos show an armed robber inside the Unity One Credit Union on Beam Avenue in Maplewood on Wednesday, Dec. 21.

The Maplewood Police Department and the Minneapolis office of the FBI are investigating an armed bank robbery that occurred at Unity One Credit Union, 1535 Beam Ave.

Local school takes a moment to remember its namesake, John Glenn


John Glenn Middle School was named after the first American to orbit Earth on Feb. 20, 1962. The former astronaut died last week.

John Glenn passed away Dec. 8 at the age of 95. He was the first American to orbit Earth and went on to have a long career as a U.S. senator from Ohio.

Susan Kent, 52, held on to her Senate District 53 seat by a narrow margin on Nov. 8, while her DFL colleague in the state House, JoAnn Ward of Maplewood, defeated her opponent in District 53A by nearly 20 percentage points.
