Art exhibit
First Presbyterian Church, 535 20th Ave. N., in South St. Paul currently has WE ARE: 2065 on display. South Minneapolis Artist Joanna Hallstrom painted 16 oil portraits of Minnesota students during this time period and recorded their thoughts about life now and what things might be like in 2065, combining the two into a freestanding interactive exhibit. As you walk through you actually hear the students thoughts in their own voices. Leave a message on the church’s Facebook page or at the church office at 651-451-6223 for more information, for group tours, or to inquire about other times. For individuals, the office is open 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Fill the Backpack
The 19th annual South St. Paul Mayor’s Youth Task Force’s Fill the Backpack campaign is underway. The task force is asking neighborhoods, organizations, groups or individuals to purchase school supplies to fill backpacks. Bring your donations to the South St. Paul City Hall, 125 Third Ave. N., and place in the barrel of the lobby. Once the backpacks are filled, they will be given to the schools in the district to distribute to students in need. For more information, contact Deb Griffith, community affairs liaison, at deb.griffith@southstpaul.org or 651-554-3230.

Sip and Spell
The South St. Paul Library will host Sip and Spell Sept. 26 at 6:30 p.m., at the Croatian Hall, 44 Second Ave. S. Rather than a traditional spelling bee, this competition will be points based. Up to 12 teams will spell words in costume to compete for a good cause, trophy and bragging right. There is a $30 registration fee per team, and proceeds will go to the library’s A Book For Every Child campaign. Through this campaign, the library is able to provide new books to children of all ages as part of the holiday program at Neighbor’s Inc.
