Smart Traveler Enrollment Program

If you are traveling internationally during the summer, now is the time to enroll in the U.S. Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). STEP is a free service that allows U.S. citizens traveling and living abroad to enroll their trip with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

Travelers who enroll in STEP will receive important information from the embassy during their trips about safety conditions in your destination country, including timely alerts and updates to travel advisories, helping you make informed decisions about your travel plans. This includes information about emergencies, natural disasters, and civil unrest.

It only takes a couple of minutes to enroll in STEP online at step.state.gov. Travelers can choose to enroll for a single trip or can create an account if they expect to be traveling frequently.  In addition, family members who are not traveling can also create accounts in order to receive safety information about the destinations of the traveler.

For information about current travel advisories, please go to travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/traveladvisories/traveladvisories.html.  For information on applying for a U.S. passport, forms, fees, and processing times, please visit travel.state.gov.
