621 school board resignation leads to vacancy

Amy Jones

Mounds View Public School Board member Amy Jones is resigning after eight years on the board, hoping to focus all of her efforts on mental health advocacy work.

Her resignation is effective June 25 and the District 621 board is currently accepting applications to fill the remainder of her term, which expires on Jan. 6, 2020.

“I decided to resign from the board now as my mental health advocacy work had the potential to conflict with the work of the board,” Jones said in an email.

She aims to build an organization and coalition to advocate for improved mental health in public schools statewide, noting the current lack of such a group in Minnesota. Jones said she hopes to stay involved with Mounds View Public Schools in this new capacity, and says she’s enjoyed every minute of her work on the board.

In addition to emphasizing her gratitude to the community, she said, “I would like to sincerely thank the rest of the board for allowing me to work with them ... and for being incredibly smart, passionate, dedicated people who want the best for the students in our district.”

Applications to fill Jones’ position will be accepted through 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 18. Applicants will then be interviewed during a school board work session at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 25, which will be open to the public. The selected candidate will be sworn in at the board’s Aug. 20 meeting.

Interested candidates can contact the superintendent’s office at 651-621-6000. It’s located at 4570 Victoria St. N. in Shoreview.
