Soccer 101

Come and learn about a sport that your kids and/or grandkids are playing, but you don’t completely understand. The instructor will go through the basics of the sport: rules, strategies and scoring, using video highlights to provide play-by-play explanations.  By the end of the hour you won’t physically be in better shape, but guaranteed, you will be a better soccer spectator. Register by May 28 for this session on June 5 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. The cost is $3, and it will take place at the Thompson Park Activity Center, 1200 Stassen Lane, West St. Paul. Android Phone Q&A 

Do you ever wonder what else your phone can do for you but don’t even know the right question to ask?  Staff from the Eagan Best Buy will have a presentation and time to answer questions you have about your device.  Register by May 31 by calling 651-403-8300. Taking place at Thompson Park Activity Center, 1200 Stassen Lane, West St. Paul, this will run from 9 to 10 a.m. June 3. The cost is $3.


Officer Scott Patrick Memorial 5K walk/run

On June 1, the Officer Scott Patrick Memorial 5K Walk/Run will take place at The Village at Mendota Heights at the intersection of Main Street and Market Square. Support this community fundraiser with all proceeds benefiting Minnesota Special Olympics. Awards will be given for the first three male and female winners in age categories 19 and under, 20-49 (Open Division), and 50 plus (Master Division). Awards ceremony and prize drawing follows conclusion of the race. Registration is open from 7 to 8:30 a.m., with races occurring from 9 to 11 a.m. The cost is $25 before 6 p.m., May 31 or $30 on race day. Kickball tournament

TriDistrict Community Education – Family Programming is teaming up with the city of Mendota Heights to throw a Community Kickball Tournament. We invite community members to create teams of eight to 15 people for a day of fun, food and friendship. Each team must have at least four children on their roster. Each registered participant will also receive a meal on the day of the tournament. Teams will only need one person to register on the TriDistirct Community Education website at or by phone at 651-403-8313. Registration is open through June 3. The tournament will run from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m., June 9 at Mendakota Park, 2171 Dodd Road.


TED TALKS Discussion

The first 20 minutes is spent watching a popular pre-selected TED TALK video. Next, a facilitator will lead a discussion by posing a few questions to get the conversation started and the group will do the rest. No registration is needed. The next session will be May 21 from 1 to 2:30. The topic is “My Stroke of Insight” with Jill Boite Taylor as the speaker. This will take place at the Thompson Park Activity Center, 1200 Stassen Lane, West St. Paul.


Family law clinic

Receive a free, 30-minute consultation from a volunteer attorney regarding family law matters such as divorce, child custody, child support, visitation, paternity issues, spousal maintenance, and domestic abuse. This clinic is a joint program of Legal Assistance of Dakota County, the Dakota County Family Court, and the Dakota County Law Library. Silver Tea

Hear Brian and Sheralyn Barnes present pop masterpieces from the late 1800s to the early 1960s using the Spanish guitar, Italian mandolin, African banjo and Hawaiian ukulele, and enjoy stories about both the music and the people behind the songs. This will run from 1 to 2 p.m., May 22 at the Inver Glen Library, 8098 Blaine Ave. E.


Chicks and Chickens

Join a Dodge Nature Center naturalist to explore and get hands-on experience with a different nature topic or animal each month. This month, explore chicks and chickens from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., May 23 at the West St. Paul Library, 199 E. Wentworth Ave.


Community plant sale

Spirit of Hope Catholic Community, 2035 Charlton Road, in Sunfish Lake will be having its annual plant sale on May 25 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be a large variety of perennials, limited annuals and more than 40 varieties of tomatoes. University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardeners will be on hand to answer questions.
