NEWSBRIEF: Nominations open for Garold ‘Jerry’ Murphy Community Service Award

In April of 2019, the 3rd annual Garold ‘Jerry’ Murphy Community Service Award will be presented to an individual for their outstanding service to the cities of Mendota Heights, Mendota or Lilydale.

Jerry began volunteering in 1967, ensuring he was available at a moment’s notice to help public safety, volunteer at schools and help out any citizen in need. It is  conservatively estimated Jerry volunteered in excess of 40,000 hours for his community, his church and his family. Most importantly, he did so without self-promotion, just simply a smile, a kind word and a story.

The “Garold ‘Jerry’ Murphy Community Service Award” is designed to recognize and honor community members who emulate Jerry’s example by providing excellent services or deeds to our community. The eligible candidate displays any (or all) of the following characteristics:

• Volunteers in the cities of Mendota Heights, Mendota or Lilydale;

• Acts as an ambassador for the community;

• Is a positive role model for youth and citizens of the community;

• Breaks down barriers within the community and promote unity;

• Provides enthusiastic leadership on a volunteer basis;

• Is a compassionate volunteer

Please take the time to consider people you encounter who selflessly give their time and talents to make this community a better place to live. The award recipient will be selected by a committee made up of community members and, as the years go on, past award recipients.
The nomination deadline is March 15. Nomination forms can be found on the city website at or picked up at the city offices and returned to:
