RAHS volleyball tracking another state berth

The Roseville Area High School volleyball team last week took the first step toward another berth in the state tournament. The Raiders, in search of a fifth consecutive trip to downtown St. Paul, rolled in their section playoff opener.

Roseville, the No. 1 seed, hosted eighth-seeded and Suburban East Conference rival Mounds View in the Section 4AAA quarterfinals on Oct. 27 and came away with a three-game sweep. Roseville struggled a bit in the first game but won the match 25-20, 25-16, 25-12.

The Raiders led by as many as 11 points in the first game but saw Mounds View rally to within three points at 23-20. It appeared the Mustangs had made it a two-point game when a kill attempt by Roseville’s Ginger Perra was called out. The official then ruled that a Mustang player had tipped Perra’s shot and the point was awarded to the Raiders, much to the chagrin of the Mounds View faithful on hand.

There was much less tension in games two and three. Roseville went on a four-point run in game two to open up a six-point lead and eventually led by as many as nine. The Raiders never trailed in game three and led by as many as 14.

As the No. 1 seed, Roseville hosted the semifinals on Halloween night, past the deadline for this edition of the Review. The semifinals pitted second-seeded North St. Paul against third-seeded Stillwater and the Raiders against fifth-seeded Centennial.

The section championship match is Thursday, Nov. 3, at 7 p.m. at Washington Magnet High School (formerly Arlington High School) in St. Paul. Roseville is very familiar with Washington High, having played the last four section finals there.
