‘Block’ on the line for Knights

“The Block” is the traveling trophy that the football teams from Irondale High School and Spring Lake Park High School battle for each year. It was created in 2011 but hasn’t spent much time in New Brighton.

Irondale has won the Block once in the five years of the trophy’s existence. The Knights go after win No. 2 in the Block series on Friday when the Panthers visit Wendt Stadium.

Taking the Block away from Spring Lake Park will be no easy task. The 3-0 Panthers entered week three ranked No. 3 in the state in the Class AAAAA poll and have found little resistance in their last two games.

Spring Lake Park improved to 3-0 with a 48-12 drubbing of St. Louis Park. The Panthers won 35-8 over Park Center in week two.

Irondale enters the Block game in search of its first win of the season. The Knights fell to 0-3 in a 42-13 loss to Benilde-St. Margaret’s on Sept. 16.

The Red Knights turned a game that was scoreless after the first quarter into a runaway by halftime. Benilde-St. Margaret’s piled up 35 points in the second quarter on four rushing touchdowns and a punt-return touchdown.

Irondale got its points on a pair of second-half touchdowns. Brendan White threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to Sean Sutherlin in the third and Parker Frieberg scored an eight-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth.

White threw for 237 yards and Sutherlin caught six passes for 154 yards.

Ricky Floyd of Benilde scored four touchdowns and ran for 145 yards.

Irondale is also home for week five when Robbinsdale Armstrong visits for homecoming.
