Knights on the road looking to win No. 1

The Irondale High School football team’s two victories in 2015 came on the road. The Knights are off to a 0-2 start this season and look to break into the win column this week when they venture away from home for the second consecutive week.

Irondale treks to St. Louis Park on Friday to visit former North Suburban Conference rival Benilde-St. Margaret’s. The Red Knights are 1-1 after a week-one win over Orono and a week-two loss to Robbinsdale Cooper.

The Knights are in a little worse shape after dropping their first two games. Waconia got back at Irondale for a 2015 loss by beating the Knights 35-8 in week one at Wendt Stadium and DeLaSalle rallied for a 22-17 win over Irondale in week two.

For the second straight year, Irondale had a chance to take down DeLaSalle but came up short. Last year, the Knights and Islanders both scored two touchdowns each but DeLaSalle earned the victory by converting an extra-point try and a two-point conversion.

In this year’s game, Irondale rallied from a 13-point second-half deficit only to surrender the game-winning touchdown late in the fourth quarter.

Irondale led 3-0 at halftime but DeLaSalle came out in the third quarter and scored 16 straight points. The Knights answered right back with a pair of touchdowns on a long pass and a fumble recovery in the end zone. The two scores put Irondale ahead 17-16.

DeLaSalle then closed out the scoring with a touchdown with four minutes left in the fourth quarter. Irondale had two possessions following the Islanders go-ahead score but one ended with a fumble and the other was squelched when the Knights turned the ball over on downs.

In week one, Waconia held Irondale to one touchdown. The Knights’ only points came on a 56-yard touchdown pass from Brendan White to Sean Sutherlin and a two-point conversion pass from White to Deandre Clarke midway through the second quarter. That cut a 16-point deficit in half but Irondale would get no closer.

Waconia went back up by 14 late in the second quarter and scored the only points of the second half on a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns.
