The Mounds View High School trap-shooting team recently competed in the state meet at Alexandria Shooting Park in Alexandria. The Mustangs finished 13th out of 20 teams in Class 6A on June 19.

Mounds View posted a team score of 432, which left the Mustangs tied with Robbinsdale Armstrong. Mounds View claimed 13th place via a tie-breaker while Armstrong fell to 14th.

Individually, junior Jack Hegle led Mounds View with a score 91.

Each participant shoots at 100 clay targets in two rounds of 50.

This is the third year that Mounds View has had a trap-shooting team and the second time the Mustangs have competed at state. Last year, only four individuals competed in the state meet but that number jumped to 11 this season. All four of last year’s state competitors also went to state this spring.

All 11 state competitors are underclassmen so they’ll be back for another season next spring. Of the 53 team members on this year’s team, only eight were seniors.

“So we have a lot to look forward to next year,” said head coach Miles Jefferis.

Mounds View’s first team, in 2014, consisted of 19 members.

“We are very proud of all the boys and girls on our team,” Jefferis said. “Each and every one of them is a very special young man or woman and a joy to be around.”
