Raiders open fastpitch post-season with an upset

Prior to the start of the Section 4AAAA faspitch softball playoffs, Roseville Area High School head coach Julie Standering said she thought her team was finding a groove at just the right time. She also said that North St. Paul was a team to beat in the upcoming section tournament.

Those two squads met in the first round on May 24 and it turns out Standering was right, at least about her own team. Roseville, the No. 7 seed, upset second-seeded and eighth-ranked North St. Paul 2-0.

The victory moved Roseville into the second round and a match-up against Hill-Murray. The game was originally scheduled for May 25 but rain forced a postponement until May 26, past the deadline for this edition of the Review.

Third and fourth round games were scheduled for May 27, which meant that the field was down to three teams by Memorial Day.

The section tournament continues with the losers-bracket final May 31 and the section championship round on June 2.

Roseville’s win over North St. Paul was its second over a ranked team in eight days. The Raiders snapped a two-game losing streak by blanking top-ranked Park-Cottage Grove 2-0 on May 16.

The Raiders were one of three teams to beat a higher-seeded opponent in the first round of the Section 4AAAA playoffs. Fifth-seeded Cretin-Derham Hall rallied to knock off fourth-seeded Tartan 5-3 and No. 6 Hill-Murray upset third-seeded Stillwater 5-2. Only top-seeded and 10th-ranked Woodbury avoided the first-round upset bug by handling eighth-seeded White Bear Lake 4-0.

By dodging the upset, Woodbury has a clear path to the section final. The Royals needed two wins to get to the final and neither would be against a team seeded higher than fifth.

Woodbury is the defending section champion and is looking for its third trip to state in program history. Roseville is trying to buck the odds and get back to state for the second time in school history and first since 2003.
