Suspicious folks and a stolen car in Falcon Heights

Arrests, Thefts and more around Falcon Heights, Lauderdale, Little Canada, and Roseville - Roseville Review police reports May 24, 2016.

Falcon Heights

Arrest

A 40-year-old man was arrested and cited May 4 at Hamline and Larpenteur avenues for driving with a revoked license and for using incorrect license plates — they belonged to a different car.

Also on May 4, a 36-year-old woman was stopped in the 1500 block of Larpenteur for displaying license tabs that belonged to another vehicle. She was cited and arrested for the tabs violation — police confiscated them, too — as well as for having expired registration and an expired license.

A 35-year-old man was arrested and cited at Fairview and Larpenteur avenues May 6 for operating an uninsured vehicle, no proof of insurance on demand, displaying revoked/suspended license plates and an equipment violation. He might have avoided the trip to the Hennepin County Jail, if not for his outstanding Hennepin County warrant for trespassing.

Burglary

Someone broke into Falcon Heights Elementary School, in the 1300 block of Garden Avenue, on May 5. Police responded to an alarm and initially set up a perimeter around the school, but ultimately, the burglar was already gone. They did manage to pull images of a suspect from security cameras inside the school. School employees reported the loss of roughly $120 in cash. Beyond stealing the cash, the burglar did an undetermined amount of damage to exterior and interior doors at the school.

DWI

It all started when he blew through a stop sign — the 19-year-old man from St. Paul was stopped May 6 at the corner of California Avenue and Albert Street, and police figured he’d been drinking. Sure enough, he blew a .10 blood alcohol concentration, and was taken to the Ramsey County Jail, where he was charged with fourth-degree misdemeanor DWI, DWI alcohol concentration over .08 and for failure to stop at that stop sign.

Suspicious folks and a stolen car

Police were called to the 1500 block of Iowa Avenue on reports of suspicious activity and there, they found some suspicious folks and a stolen car. Out of a presumed five passengers in the vehicle, three were released; one 21-year-old man was booked at the Ramsey County Jail for felony possession of a stolen vehicle, while another was arrested and booked for the same crime and his auspicious back story. The other 21-year-old man ended up in the Ramsey County Jail for possession of the stolen vehicle as well as a Scott County warrant for driving after revocation, a Ramsey County warrant for contempt of court and a pickup and hold notice issued by St. Paul police in an assault case. Minnepolis police were alerted that the stolen vehicle had been found and it was impounded.

Lauderdale

Police arrested and cited a cavalcade of drivers in Lauderdale, men and women ages 22-48, who were driving with suspended or revoked licenses. Equipment violations and failures to provide proof of insurance were also reported.

Little Canada

Burglary

Someone broke into an apartment in the 2800 block of Market Place Drive overnight May 5 while the tenant was asleep. No other details were listed in the police report.

Apartment fire

Some $20,000 worth of damage resulted from an apartment fire in the 300 block of Labore Road May 16. Investigators said the fire originated in an apartment bedroom where a nighstand was pushed up against the bed. The fire marshal said the fire was likely started by a candle or errant cigarette. All the people in the building were evacuated during the fire, and the tenants of the apartment where the blaze began are looking at a financial loss — they didn’t have renters insurance.

Car troubles

Someone smashed out the rear window of a car in the 100 block of Big Circle Drive May 16 but didn’t take anything.

Overnight into May 17, someone pried open the sliding door of a work van at a business in the first block of East County Road B. Oddly, the door was bent open, even though the van had been left unlocked. Police speculate that the prowler didn’t think to just try opening it before using a pry bar.

The 67-year-old owner of a white enclosed cargo trailer reported it stolen from the Public Storage facility in the first block of East County Road B May 12. She said she lost the tools stored in the trailer as well, but there’s no estimate of the overall cost of the loss. There is video of the theft and police are investigating.

Carjacking

A 48-year-old woman who had just bought a car she’d found in Stacy for $600 was sitting in her new ride in the parking lot across the street from St. John’s Church of Little Canada in the 300 block of Little Canada Road the evening of May 11 when someone opened the door to the car, punched her in the face and threw her to the ground, where she hit the back of her head. Luckily, the woman did not need medical attention. The attacker, described to police by a witness as a muscular white man with tattoos, then stole the car. The next day, the woman was going to Taco Bell on the East Side of St. Paul when she found her car, parked at Third and Maria avenues. All her possessions were still in it, including the car keys.
