High school tennis playoffs have arrived

Spring is the shortest of the three high school sports seasons so it shouldn’t be any surprise that the post-season has already arrived.

Section team competitions in boys tennis started this week and all three Review area teams kick off the section playoffs on May 17.

Hill-Murray, North and Tartan are all members of Section 4AA along with 10 other teams. The first three rounds are played at the higher-seeded team’s home court in each match.

The championship final takes place May 25 at the Baseline Tennis Center on the University of Minnesota campus.

Hill-Murray had recorded six match victories as of May 12. They included Metro East Conference wins over Tartan, Simley and North and non-conference triumphs against St. Paul Johnson, Mankato East and Red Wing.

Tartan sat at four wins as of May 12. The Titans knocked off district rival North along with non-conference opponents St. Paul Washington, Richfield and St. Paul Johnson.

North, whose head coach Jerry Diebel at the beginning of the season said his boys team was young and looking to gain experience, entered last week without a victory. The Polars had two matches on the schedule last week but results were not available for this edition of the Review.

Cretin-Derham Hall is the defending Section 4AA champion but is no longer a member of the section. The Raiders shifted to Section 3AA for at least the 2016 and 2017 seasons.

The favorite in Section 4AA is probably Mounds View, the defending Class AA state champion. The Mustangs were ranked No. 4 in Class AA last week and at the time had lost only to top-ranked East Ridge (twice) and ninth-ranked Wayzata.

The section individual tournament follows the team competition. Section titles in singles and doubles will be up for grabs on May 26 and 31 at Baseline Tennis Center.
