If it’s too good to be true...

Police receive reports  of new car scam

A 42-year-old Little Canada woman reported to police May 4 she was the victim of a scam, which investigators have described as a new type of vehicle scam.

The woman said she began receiving texts from a man who claimed he had met her at a conference, though she was unsure of who he was or how he’d gotten her phone number.

Still, she agreed to go out on a date with the man and meet at a bowling alley.

At the bowling alley, the man said he was a Hennepin County case manager and offered the woman quite the deal on a new car: for $4,000 plus $2,000 for various taxes and fees, the man could secure the woman a new vehicle. She told police she liked the idea.

Later, with cash in hand and all the paperwork to go along with the “transaction,” she went with the man to an office building in downtown Minneapolis. The man went into the building to handle the business of the new car, then returned to the woman outside and drove her home. The man said he would drive her to a Toyota dealership the next day, but he never showed up.

The $6,000 was gone and the woman couldn’t get in touch with him — his phone had been deactivated.

Police said they have some leads.

Falcon Heights

Arrest

Her contempt for court will only bring her back there — a 43-year-old woman was arrested April 25 at Cleveland and Larpenteur avenues on an outstanding Ramsey County contempt of court warrant. The arrest got her a trip to the Ramsey County Jail.

No doubt, a 17-year-old boy’s plans for the day were ended when police arrested him at Larpenteur and Hamline avenues April 29 for driving without a license.

How R U? The 21-year-old man who was arrested and cited at Snelling and Larpenteur avenues April 30 for driving with a suspended license and for texting while driving isn’t doing so well.

Police helped out in serving a warrant on a 53-year-old man May 1 in the 1700 block of Albert Street who was wanted on a Ramsey County warrant for driving after suspension and a Hennepin County warrant issued out of family court. He was booked at the Ramsey County Jail.

Putting the brakes on a jail break

St. Paul police put out word that they were looking for an escaped fugitive, who possibly had weapons, and gave a description of the car he was driving. Police caught up with the man’s vehicle at Snelling and Larpenteur avenues April 29 and pulled him over. Though guns were drawn following the stop, the people inside the vehicle were taken into custody without incident. The 46-year-old fugitive was booked at the Ramsey County Jail on a felony warrant issued by the Department of Corrections for felony escape from custody and for fleeing police in a vehicle. The other person in the car, a 33-year-old woman, also ended up with a trip to the Ramsey County Jail, since St. Paul police had a warrant out for her for so-called “financial transaction card fraud.”

Lauderdale

Theft

A prowler forced his way into a work van parked in the 1600 block of Eustis Street and the van’s 60-year-old male owner reported the crime April 25. The man said tools were stolen from inside — the cost of the loss and damage to the van has yet to be determined.

Meth

Police pulled over a suspicious looking vehicle in the 2400 block of Larpenteur Avenue April 27 and their suspicions appear to have been correct. The driver, a 37-year-old man, was arrested and booked at the Ramsey County Jail on charges of felony fifth-degree possession of a controlled substance — methamphetamine — along with charges of driving after license revocation, driving a car without insurance and having no proof of insurance on demand.

Little Canada

Arrest

Police responded to an apartment complex in the 100 block of Little Canada Road early in the morning of May 4 on reports of someone banging on a patio door. Police found a 24-year-old man knocking on the sliding glass door of his apartment, apparently trying to get in. Police found the man had a misdemeanor warrant out for domestic assault, so they took him to the Ramsey County Jail.

Signs, signs, everywhere a sign

A sheriff’s deputy stopped near construction barricades in the 2700 block of Centerville Road observed a blue Jeep drive around the barricades May 7, “even though it clearly state ROAD CLOSED,” per police reports. The deputy stopped the man driving the Jeep, who had no identification or license on him, though he claimed to be 27 years old and from Little Canada. He was arrested.
