Rams compete in adapted floor hockey state tournament

The Mounds View/Irondale/Roseville adapted floor hockey-PI division team closed out its season last weekend with an appearance in the state tournament. The Rams went 1-2 and finished sixth at the two-day event played at Bloomington Jefferson High School.

The Rams were the No. 4 North seed and opened the tournament against No. 1 South seed Dakota United, an eight-school co-op whose players come from Apple Valley, Eagan, Eastview, Hastings, Henry Sibley, Rosemount, Simley and South St. Paul.

Dakota United beat the Rams 12-3. Grant Drew led the Rams with a pair of goals and Mark Lippert tallied the other.

The Rams bounced back from the loss to beat St. Paul Humboldt, the No. 3 South seed, 9-3 in the consolation semifinals. Luke Pfiefer had a monster game for the Rams as he notched a pure hat trick en route to four goals and two assists. Grant also recorded a pure hat trick while Lippert scored twice. Freshman Luke Kostecky earned the victory in goal.

The victory sent the Rams to the consolation final against the No. 2 South seed Rochester, which was upset in the first round by No. 3 North seed Brainerd/Pillager 4-3 in overtime. Rochester then took out Maple Grove, the No. 4 South seed 9-1 in the consolation semifinals.

Rochester earned the consolation hardware by bouncing the Rams 10-2. The Rams had 21 shots on goal but could convert only two. Pfiefer and Drew each tallied one goal for the Rams.

Drew’s play in the tournament earned him a spot on the 12-player all-tournament team.

The Rams finished their season with a record of 4-8. During the regular season, the Rams beat South Suburban once and Maple Grove twice.

Dakota United claimed the state championship by beating No. 1 North seed Anoka-Hennepin 3-2 in the finals.

The Rams CI Division Adapted Floor Hockey team went 1-9-1 in the regular season but did not advance to the state tournament.

North Suburban won the CI division state title by beating its three tournament opponents by a combined score of 27-12. North Suburban is a co-op team made up of players from Centennial and Spring Lake Park.
