Huskies hoping to build on late-season surge

After suffering through a seven-game losing streak in late December and early January, the St. Anthony Village High School girls basketball team finished the season by winning 8 of its final 11 games. The Huskies are hoping that kind of success can carry them to a post-season run.

Any run St. Anthony makes in the playoffs must start with a victory on March 2 in the Section 4AAA quarterfinals. The Huskies open the playoffs with a trip to Totino-Grace that night.

St. Anthony, the seventh seed, struggled for the first half of the season when it went 2-12 but bounced back to go 8-3 since Jan. 15. The Huskies finished with only two fewer wins than second-seeded Totino-Grace.

The Eagles’ season was just the opposite as they started out fast but then slumped. Totino-Grace went 7-1 in December but just 5-13 after that. The Eagles did most of their winning in non-conference games and struggled against Northwest Suburban Conference foes. They went 6-13 in the conference.

The winner of St. Anthony vs. Totino-Grace advances to the semifinals on Saturday at St. Paul Washington High School against either third-seeded DeLaSalle or sixth-seeded Fridley.

The other quarterfinal features fifth-seeded Hill-Murray visiting fourth-seeded Mahtomedi. The winner faces top-seeded St. Paul Como Park on Saturday.
