Apply for a New Brighton commission

Do you want to become more involved in your local government? Consider applying to volunteer on a City Commission.

Applicants must have a desire to serve their community in a volunteer capacity and be willing to contribute the number of hours necessary for the particular group to which they are applying. Applicants must also be eligible voters who reside in New Brighton (with the exception of the EDC Commission whose membership may be open to any resident or non-resident affiliated with a New Brighton business who is interested in the business climate and economic direction of the City) and be available for monthly meetings. People of all occupations and experiences are encouraged to apply.  The City Council will be reviewing applications and conducting brief interviews in February and early March for appointments to commence April 1. Applications will be accepted at City Hall through February 5, 2016. Appointments are typically for three year terms.

• Civil Service Commission: The Civil Service Commission is a three-member citizen committee that meets at least once a year to consider hiring and promotion of police officers. It also serves on an as-needed basis for hearings on disciplinary actions.

• Economic Development Commission: This Commission advises the Council on matters concerning industrial and commercial development for the city. This commission meets the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30 a.m. at City Hall.

• Parks, Recreation & Environmental Commission: This Commission advises the City Council on the proper use of and care for parks and the natural environment and advises on policies covering recreational activities of the city. Issues relating to the New Brighton Community Center also come under the duties of this commission. The commission meets at 6:30 p.m.on the first Wednesday of the month.

• Planning Commission: This citizen commission advises the Council on all city land use planning matters. Duties include the development and maintenance of the New Brighton Comprehensive Plan, carrying out procedures directed by the City Council and making recommendations to the Council. The Planning Commission meets monthly on the third Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
