Fans of the Roseville Area High School wrestling team will have a number of individuals to follow at this week’s state tournament. The Raiders advanced four wrestlers out of Section 4AAA.

December Htoo, Tyler Graham and Isaac Schmaedeke secured their state spots by winning section titles at their respective weight classes, and Hsinku Lay claimed his state berth by winning a true-second place match.

Htoo, Graham and Schmaedeke, all seniors, are headed to state for a second consecutive year. All three qualified last year by finishing second at sections and this year won section titles.

Htoo (35-4) rolled through the 128-pound bracket at the section tournament on Saturday. He opened with a major decision, scored a fall in 37 seconds in the semifinals and rolled to another major decision in the finals.

Graham (34-6) rattled off two falls and a 4-1 decision to claim the section title at 170 pounds.

Schmaedeke (35-2) was the top seed at heavyweight and, following a first-round bye, claimed the section crown with a pair of falls. In the semifinals, he pinned his opponent from Stillwater in 24 seconds and wrapped up the title with a second-period fall in the finals.

Lay (30-12) took a bit more of a roundabout route to his state berth. After recording a 9-2 decision in the first round, Lay lost in the semifinals and dropped into the wrestleback bracket. A pair of falls gave him third place and a berth in the true-second match against Jacob Costello of White Bear Lake. Lay beat Costello 7-2 to earn a spot in the state tournament.

In addition to the four state entrants, Roseville had seven other individuals place (top six) at the section meet. They were Win Aung (fifth at 132), Kawar Paw (fifth at 138), Alex LePierre (fourth at 145), Tamir Beeler (sixth at 152), Henry Elholm (third at 182), Tony Landucci (fourth at 195) and Daniel Turner (sixth at 220).

Elholm came close to giving Roseville a fifth state entrant. He advanced to the 182-pound final before dropping an 8-5 decision. Because the wrestler who came through the wrestleback bracket hadn’t lost to Elholm in the tournament, they met in the true-second place match and Elholm lost 16-9.

White Bear Lake, the section team champion, also led all teams in individual state berths with seven. Woodbury was next with six and Roseville took third with four. A total of nine teams qualified individuals for state out of Section 4AAA.

The state individual tournament runs Friday and Saturday at Xcel Energy Center.
