Area wrestlers realize state-tournament dream

Five wrestlers from Bulletin-area high schools are headed to downtown St. Paul for the state tournament later this week. Four from Mounds View and one from St. Anthony Village secured their tournament berths by finishing in the top two in their respective weight classes at last Saturday's Section 5AAA tournament.

Representing Mounds View starting on Friday at Xcel Energy Center are Tanner Day, Karl Keeler, Sam McGinnity and Jack Graham. St. Anthony Village's Tristan Wehmas is also on his way to state this week.

Wehmas, a senior, wrapped up his second consecutive trip to state by winning the 220-pound section title via a 2-1 decision in the final. Wehmas opened the tournament with a first-round bye and then scored a 5-1 decision in the semifinals.

Last year as a junior, Wehmas made state via a runner-up finish at sections.

All four of Mounds View's state entrants finished second in their respective weight classes at the section meet. Going to state for the second consecutive year are Day and Keeler. Day lost in the 120-pound final and then had to win a true-second match to get to state.

Keeler fell in the 126-pound final, but did not have to wrestle a true-second match to qualify for state.

Keeler and Day were also section runners-up last year.

Going to state for the first time for Mounds View are McGinnity and Graham. McGinnity, wrestling at 138 pounds, dropped a one-point decision in the final and avoided having to wrestle a true-second match. Graham, a 145-pounder, lost in the final but rebounded to win 8-4 in the true-second match.

Both McGinnity and Graham finished fourth at sections last year.

In addition to the four state entrants, Mounds View had six other individuals place (top six) at sections. Troy Ito had probably the toughest day of any of them as he lost 6-2 in the 160-pound final and then 9-6 in the true-second match after jumping out to a 6-2 lead.

Other placers for Mounds View were Nick Dunagan (fifth at 106 pounds), Benji Keillor (fourth at 152), Andrew Bjorklund (third at 182), Alec Edgett (fourth at 195) and Johnny Tereault (sixth at 220).

Irondale didn't have any wrestlers qualify for state, but did have five individuals place at sections. They were Jordan Kedrowski (sixth at 113), Sean LeFleur (fifth at 126), Nick Harelson (fifth at 160), Jake Spencer (sixth at 170) and Abe Dukuly (sixth at heavyweight).

Centennial and Maple Grove tied for the lead with eight state entrants each from Section 5AAA. Mounds View and Rogers were next with four each, Osseo had two and Champlin Park and Spring Lake Park/St. Anthony Village had one each.

The individual portion of the state tournament takes place Friday and Saturday. Thursday is reserved for the team portion of the event.
