Showdown looms for RAHS boys hoops team

The final week of the regular season has arrived for the Roseville Area High School boys basketball team, and a showdown awaits the Raiders on Friday.

Roseville enters the week trailing Cretin-Derham Hall by one game in the Suburban East Conference standings. Roseville visits Cretin-Derham Hall on Friday in a game that most likely will have conference-title implications.

As long as Roseville takes care of business on Tuesday at home against Woodbury, the Raiders will have a shot at at least a share of the Suburban East crown. Cretin-Derham Hall hosts East Ridge on Tuesday and a loss to the Raptors and a Roseville win over Woodbury would set a winner-takes-all match-up on Friday.

If Roseville enters Friday’s game still a game behind CDH, then the best RAHS can do is share the conference title.
Cretin-Derham Hall won the first match-up between the two teams back on Jan. 16. Roseville led by as many as nine in the first half of that game, but Cretin rallied and won the game by outscoring Roseville by 10 in the second half.

Cretin (21-3) enters this week having won 13 straight games since losing to Hopkins in early January. The Raiders’ lone conference loss came at the hands of Mounds View in mid-December.

Roseville’s most recent loss was the one to Cretin. Since then, Roseville (20-4) has won nine in a row, including an 89-49 pasting of East Ridge last week. Mitch Poss got the rout started with 19 first-half points, 15 of which came on three-pointers.

Following this week’s games, Roseville turns its attention to securing a berth in the state tournament, something that hasn’t happened for the Raiders since 1997. Roseville is likely to be the No. 1 seed in Section 4AAAA playoffs, which kick off Feb. 25.
