RAHS wrestlers gunning for state berths

A year ago, the Roseville Area High School wrestling team sent three individuals to the state tournament and all three are back this season. They, along with their teammates, go after another trip to state when they compete in the Section 4AAA individual tournament this weekend.

Seniors December Htoo, Tyler Graham and Isaac Schmaedeke are looking to get back to the state tournament after qualifying last year. All three were ranked in the top 10 in their respective weight class entering the post-season.

Htoo was ranked eighth at 126 pounds, Graham was eighth at 170 pounds and Schmaedeke was third at heavyweight. All three have at least 30 victories this season.

Two other Roseville wrestlers enter the section individual tournament with at least 25 victories. Junior Hsinku Lay wrestles at 160 pounds and senior Henry Elholm competes at 182.

North St. Paul High School is hosting the section tournament on Friday and Saturday. The state tournament is March 26-28 at Xcel Energy Center.

4AAA team tournament

The Section 4AAA team tournament was held last Saturday at Woodbury High School and Roseville advanced to the semifinals before bowing out.

Roseville was the fourth seed and opened the team tournament with a 45-26 victory over fifth-seeded Cretin-Derham Hall in the quarterfinals. The victory sent the Raiders to the semifinals, where they lost 53-15 to top-seeded White Bear Lake.

White Bear Lake went on to win the section championship with a 31-27 win over second-seeded Woodbury. The Bears will compete in the Class AAA state team tournament on Feb. 26 at Xcel Energy Center.
