Mounds View girls tennis makes state again

For the eighth consecutive year, the Mounds View High School girls tennis team is headed to the state tournament. The Mustangs locked down the state berth with a 6-1 victory over Coon Rapids in the Section 5AA final last Thursday.

As has become customary in 5AA, Mounds View rolled to the section title. In three matches, the Mustangs lost only two individual matches. They blanked Totino-Grace 7-0 in the quarterfinals and topped Champlin Park 6-1 in the semifinals.

Mounds View will join the other seven section champions for the Class AA tournament starting on Oct. 21 at the Baseline Tennis Center at the University of Minnesota. All eight teams that qualified this year were No. 1 seeds in their respective sections.

All eight state teams also ranked in the top 10 in the coaches poll, with Edina leading the way at No. 1. Also in the tournament are second-ranked Prior Lake, third-ranked Minnetonka, sixth-ranked Mahtomedi, seventh-ranked Rochester Mayo, eighth-ranked St. Cloud Tech, ninth-ranked Mounds View and 10th-ranked Princeton.

The only ranked teams not in the tournament are No. 4 Blake and No. 5 Wayzata, which are both in Section 6AA along with Edina.

More state berths are on the line this week as the Section 5AA singles and doubles tournaments are Monday and Tuesday. Mounds View's Ali Kopiecki is the No. 1 seed in the singles tournament while Kellis Brandt is seeded sixth. In doubles, Sarah Conlin-Brandenburg and Claire Chen are seeded fourth and Anna Roesler and Amber Zhao are unseeded.
