Raiders, Beacons earn big volleyball wins

The prep volleyball teams at Roseville Area High School and Concordia Academy put together solid stretches of matches last week. Both teams are ranked in the state's top 10 and might even move up in this week's poll.

Roseville, ranked eighth in Class AAA, played twice last week and came away with a pair of impressive victories. The Raiders started off with a 3-2 win over fourth-ranked Hopkins on Wednesday, and followed that up with a 3-1 win over 15th-ranked Rosemount the next night.

The Raiders begin this week with a record of 3-1 and host Park-Cottage Grove (1-2) on Thursday and Bemidji (3-1) on Friday. Roseville's lone loss so far this fall was a 3-1 defeat at the hands of 11th-ranked North St. Paul.

Concordia Academy was rather busy last week, playing six matches in five days. That stretch included the Aerie Challenge tournament hosted by Apple Valley High School.

The Beacons, ranked eighth in Class AA, faced off against four Class AAA teams in the tournament and came away with a 3-1 record and a third-place finish. Concordia beat Minneapolis Southwest and Cretin-Derham Hall in the first two rounds on Friday to advance to the championship semifinals on Saturday. Rosemount loomed in the semifinals and beat the Beacons 2-0.

Concordia bounced back from the loss to take down Centennial 2-1 to claim third place.

Prior to the tournament, Concordia picked up victories over Legacy Christian Academy and St. Agnes.

Concordia (5-2) has a slower week on tap with only one match. The Beacons host White Bear Lake, another Class AAA team, on Tuesday.
