Former Raider hockey coach Sertich hangs it up

Following 13 years of coaching hockey at Roseville Area High School, Steve Sertich switched to the college level and took over the women’s program at Bemidji State University. Sertich recently stepped down as the head coach of the Beavers after eight seasons.

Sertich announced his retirement at a March 17 press conference. He leaves Bemidji as the winningest coach in program history with 81 victories.

“I’ve truly enjoyed my time as a teacher and coach at both the high school and Division I levels and now I look forward to the next chapter of my life,” Sertich said at the news conference.

Among the accolades Sertich earned while at Bemidji was the 2009-10 Western Collegiate Athletic Conference coach of the year award. The Beavers finished fifth in the WCHA twice under Sertich, who also coached the women’s program’s first All-America selection and 10 all-WCHA players. Bemidji also won its first playoff series that year to qualify for its inaugural WCHA Final Face-Off.

The Bemidji women’s team’s best season came under Sertich in 2011-12 as it won a record 17 games and was ranked as high as seventh in the nation.

During his time at Roseville, Sertich coached the boys team to a pair of state-tournament appearances. The 2002 team finished fourth and the 2003 squad was the state runner-up. He was a three-time section coach of the year and won the state coach of the year award in 2003.

Following the 2003 season, Sertich stepped down as the Roseville boys coach and took over the girls head coaching duties. In three seasons, the Raiders won 62 games, qualified for one state tournament and won a pair of Suburban East Conference titles. In 2004, Sertich was named section coach of the year.

Prior to getting into coaching, Sertich played collegiately at Colorado College, was a member of the U.S. national team and played in the 1976 Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria. He also played professionally in Germany for three seasons.

Two of Sertich’s sons played Division I college hockey. Like his dad, Marty played at Colorado College and won the Hobey Baker Award, given to the top collegiate hockey player in the nation, in 2005.

Steve Sertich and his wife Sally live in Bemidji.
