Arden Hills resident Shirley Dorow receives Award

Arden Hills resident Shirley Dorow received an Alumni Achievement Award from Valparaiso (Ind.) University earlier this month. The 1953 graduate served as a deaconess and social-work aide in the United States before accompanying her husband, the Rev. Dr. Maynard Dorow, to South Korea, where they worked for 40 years as missionaries. Shirley also served as a journalist, writing and editing for the English-language Korea Times; as a teacher, establishing a program for international four-year-olds at the Seoul Foreign School; and teaching English as a second language at the University of Foreign Studies in Seoul and elsewhere. Since retiring from mission work in 1998, Shirley and her husband have been active at Jehovah Lutheran in St. Paul with food-shelf work and other community services.
