Maplewood man killed in Pine County crash

Maplewood resident William D. Joseph, 50, died Aug. 17 after his 2011 Toyota Prius was hit by a pickup truck on a road in rural Pine County.

Joseph was westbound on two-lane state Highway 70 when his car was struck by a Dodge Ram pickup driven by Danny Kitterman, 48, of Waite Park. According to a report from the Minnesota State Patrol, the truck apparently ran a stop sign going north on Government Road and broadsided the Prius around 2:45 p.m.

The incident report does not state how fast the motorists were driving, but Joseph’s car was a total loss, and damages to Kitterman’s truck were described as “severe.” Airbags were deployed in both vehicles.

Joseph was transported to a nearby hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Regan Klein, 9, was a passenger in Joseph’s vehicle. She was not injured, nor was Kitterman.

Troopers said they detected alcohol in Kitterman’s system, and booked him in Pine County Jail under suspicion of criminal vehicular homicide and DUI. He was released three days later on Aug. 20, as charges had not been filed against him.

The State Patrol is still investigating the crash.
