Upsets have been the story of the first few rounds of the Section 4AAA baseball playoffs. Only Mounds View has been able to avoid losing to a lower-seeded opponent.

The second-seeded Mustangs remained unbeaten in the post-season with a 5-2 victory over Stillwater on Tuesday night at Midway Stadium.

Half of the top four seeds, which received byes into the double-elimination portion of the tournament, have already been eliminated. Top-seeded Tartan and third-seeded Mahtomedi both went 0-2.

Mounds View opened the section playoffs with a 10-0, six-inning pasting of seventh-seeded Cretin-Derham Hall on Saturday and followed that up with the Stillwater win on Tuesday.

The Mustangs never trailed but did receive a bit of a scare from the sixth-seeded Ponies. Mounds View built an early two-run cushion thanks to RBI singles by Chance Carnahan in the second and Sam Hentges in the third.

Stillwater was unable to get much going offensively until the fifth when a throwing error by Mounds View led to the Ponies’ two runs.

Until that point, Mounds View starting pitcher Ethan Decaster had kept the Stillwater bats mostly in check. He also didn’t let the fifth-inning setback rattle him.

Mounds View regained the lead for good in the sixth. Nate Douvier led off with a single and later scored on Austin Smestad’s base hit. Alec Abercrombie then walked and both Smestad and Abercrombie scored on Max Knutson’s double.

Decaster then closed out the game with a pair of strikeouts and a flyout to left field in the seventh inning. He gave up the two runs, both unearned, on seven hits. He walked none and struck out five.

With the victory, Mounds View advances to the winner’s bracket final on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Midway Stadium against ninth-seeded Roseville. Roseville, which swept a double-header from the Mustangs during the regular season, has been the surprise of the tournament with victories over eighth-seeded Woodbury, top-seeded Tartan and fifth-seeded Hill-Murray.

The winner advances to the section final next week and has two chances to win the section title and move on to the state tournament. The loser must win the loser’s bracket final and then win twice in the finals to make state.
