Roseville/White Bear doubleheader: Nice start, tough ending

Another chapter was added on Tuesday to the story of the athletic rivalry between Roseville Area High School and White Bear Lake Area High School. This section started out well for the Raiders but finished with a tough ending.

Tuesday night featured the Bears' boys basketball team playing at Roseville and also included the two schools' boys hockey teams squaring off in the section playoffs at the State Fair Coliseum.

The basketball game went Roseville's way as the Raiders knocked off White Bear 73-57. The victory kept the Raiders in a first-place tie with Woodbury in the Suburban East Conference standings.

As the cagers were putting the finishing touches on their victory, the Raiders' boys hockey team was taking the ice in the Section 4AA semifinals. Despite nearly doubling up the Bears on the shot clock, Roseville fell 3-2 to see its season come to an end.

In the basketball game, Jordan Burich and Mack Johnson teamed up to score more than 60 percent of their team's points. Both seniors scored 23 points each.

Roseville closes out the regular season on Friday at Hastings. The section playoffs begin next week.

On the ice, Roseville got goals from Robb Stautz and Ross Stecklein but was unable to come up with the tying goal in the final minutes of the third period. It wasn't for a lack of opportunities as the Raiders peppered the White Bear net with 39 shots, 31 of which came in the second and third periods.

Stautz scored his goal with 4.4 seconds left in the second period. He gathered in a loose puck following a shot from the point by Ryan Novotny and tucked it into the Bears' cage. The goal tied the game at 1-1.

White Bear retook the lead 1:14 into the third period but Stecklein knotted it at 2-2 three minutes later. Stecklein threw the puck toward the White Bear net from a shallow angle and it was redirected by the skate of a Bears' defenseman and into the goal.

White Bear Lake tallied the game-winner at 8:08 of the third and then held off Roseville's barrage the rest of the way.

Roseville reached the semifinals by upsetting Tartan 6-5 in the quarterfinals on Saturday at Aldrich Arena. Stautz notched a hat trick, including the tying and winning goals.

The Raiders finished the season with a record of 12-13-2.
